The Bay Area’s Guide to Kids’ Activities
Playplanit.com was founded in January of 2010 by Laurel Kellam & Allison Howard. They are two San Francisco career women who, in the space of 9 short months, found themselves as Stay-at-Home Moms looking for things to do with their newborns. They knew there were tons of businesses out there that had fun events for moms to gather & babies to play — there just wasn’t an easy way to find or remember them.
They thought, “Is there a service out there that does this?” If so, it would need to have truly kid-friendly events (plus a few mom-friendly ones with childcare). It would need to include small businesses and neighborhood gems that provide great offerings for families. They searched everywhere. What they wanted didn’t exist.
So they built it. (or rather, they hired someone to do that but details, details…)
Playplanit.com lets parents find local happenings and lets local businesses reach a larger audience. To date, Playplanit has focused on San Francisco for the five & younger crowd. The vision is to offer a lifeboat to moms everywhere with kids of every age.
Allison lives in San Francisco with her husband, Griffin, her son, Blaise, and her daughter, Victoria. Since she graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2002, she’s worked as an engineer for both the Department of Defense and in the private sector, most recently enjoying a Sales Engineering role at Salesforce.com. When she’s not running from one place to the next with (or after) the kids, she’s typically still running — on a trail that is. She’ll happily offer her advice on running strollers, foreign marathons, post-workout adult beverages, or fabrics that wick… if you care to indulge her. You can reach Allison at allison@playplanit.com
Laurel is a native Northern Californian who spent 4 years abroad at University of California, San Diego. After graduation she found herself with a degree in History and no applicable skills. So she entered Sales. A decade later, she was working for Thomson Reuters in Times Square in New York City living the good life. When she and her husband, Andy, found out they were pregnant they packed their bags & headed home to San Francisco. A few months later, the cutest redhead the world has seen, Eliza, made her appearance. Laurel left the working world to spend time with her daughter and hasn’t looked back. In her spare time, you can find her with her nose in a book, sweating away in Bikram yoga or enjoying a glass of wine with friends. You can reach Laurel at laurel@playplanit.com
